A Different Parma

UNUSUAL AND ODD PLACES OF A SMALL TOWN

Among my itineraries you will sometimes find some ideas for a different route. It is not minor, and very often not even secret, because a lot of places I suggest you to come and see with me are quite frequently open and accessible. They simply are unknown to the more, and very frequently also to the locals.

For instance, did you know that here in Parma we have an extraordinarily important Museum of Chinese and Ethnographic Art? Or that in several churches in Parma there are wooden choirs of rare beauty?

Moreover some of the historical palaces downtown are richly frescoed and decorated, the same Palazzo Ducale, the Ducal Palace, even though it is quite often open, is not frequently included in the itineraries of our visitors. The Biblioteca Palatina, Palatine Library, and the Museo Bodoniano are also very interesting.

I can also suggest you some routes in the Oltretorrente, on the other bank of the river, where there are farnesian churches and oratories as well as buildings of different types, like the Ospedale Vecchio, Parma’s old hospital. Here it is also possible to choose a lot of different thematic routes, for example the ones related to the barricades, or to Father Lino, a Franciscan who died almost a hundred years ago, but that’s still cherished by the real parmesans.
